A Midnight Visit

THAT NIGHT TONY DREAMED about a letter which he had to deliver to an old house. He rang at the front door, but no one opened it. So then he ran all round the house, knocking on the windows. He knocked and knocked …. Suddenly Tony awoke with a jump. The loud knocking was not in his dream—someone was knocking on his window. It must be Anna!

He jumped out of bed, pulled the curtains aside and flung open the window. But it was not Anna sitting outside. The Little Vampire was perched on the window-sill with an embarrassed smile on his face.

‘Hello, Tony,’ he said in his husky voice.

‘Rudolph!’ stuttered Tony.

‘Nice surprise for you, isn’t it?’ remarked the vampire, and climbed into the room.

Tony switched on the lamp on his desk. ‘I—was already asleep,’ he murmured.

‘So I see,’ said the vampire, pointing to Tony’s rumpled bed. ‘But never mind! You can go back to sleep straight away—once we’ve discussed this business of a Transylvanian Evening.’

‘A what?’

‘We want to celebrate on Saturday. Are your parents in?’

‘My parents?’ Tony peered at his alarm clock. It was just after midnight. ‘Yes. But I’m sure they’re asleep.’

The vampire snorted indignantly. ‘I don’t mean now—I mean on Saturday, when we celebrate with a Transylvanian Evening.’

‘I think they’re going out to the cinema.’

‘Great.’ The vampire looked pleased and rubbed his hands. ‘Have you any eggs?’

‘Eggs?’ Tony was completely nonplussed. ‘Yes—’

‘Then that’s everything fixed for Saturday.’

‘But—I don’t even know what a Transylvanian Evening is!’

The vampire gave him a friendly grin. ‘You’ll find out soon enough.’

‘And I don’t know where you’re going to hold it either!’

‘Don’t you?’

‘No.’

The vampire gave a broad grin, so Tony could see his pointed eye-teeth. ‘Here.’

‘What?’

‘It’s all because of Olga,’ explained the vampire. ‘She’s terribly homesick for Transylvania.’

‘But what’s that got to do with me?’

‘Olga told us that your room looked like the Pigsbubble family vault.’

‘Oh I see,’ said Tony. ‘I changed it all around. But it was a heck of a lot of work.’

‘I’m sure you could do it all again for Olga,’ the vampire replied, adding in a choking voice: ‘The poor thing. Every evening she just lies in her coffin and cries.’ He wiped his eyes and climbed onto the window-sill. ‘So, see you Saturday, Tony!’

‘Wait!’ cried Tony.

‘What is it?’

‘Will Anna be coming too?’

‘Yes. Providing her graze is better by then.’

‘Is she hurt?’ Tony was startled.

The vampire giggled. ‘She must have been very worked up after she called on you last Saturday. Anyway, apparently she flew into the branch of a tree and got a long scratch on her face. And she’s so vain she doesn’t want to be seen in public looking like that.’

‘Oh, I see,’ said Tony. Then perhaps she was not cross with him any more and simply had not visited him because of the scratch?

Once back in bed, he was much too excited to fall asleep at once. Who knew what a Transylvanian Evening might entail—and Anna might even come….
